SQA Update 24.3.20
In light of the current public health crisis, the SQA released a statement this afternoon confirming that no coursework for Higher or Advanced Higher courses should be submitted for marking, irrespective of whether the coursework is complete or not. SQA advise that coursework that is fully or partially complete can still be used as part of the range of evidence that will be used to determine pupils’ estimated grades and that further details on the estimation of grades and the approach to certification will be issued in due course. Coursework for the majority of National 5 courses was submitted to SQA by the 18 March deadline. SQA are still to confirm whether this coursework will be marked as normal. Any outstanding National 5 coursework, including subjects with deadlines beyond 18 March, should not be submitted for marking.
We understand that this news will be disappointing for many who have completed, or who were keen to complete, their subject coursework. Rest assured that your child’s teachers will use their experience and professionalism to scrutinise the available evidence to determine fair estimated grades that reflect pupils’ skills and abilities.
We wish to extend our support to pupils, parents and carers at this difficult time; please do not hesitate to contact the school via e-mail if you have further questions. We ask, however, that you refrain from asking staff to confirm estimated grades for pupils at this time as we are not yet in a position to offer this information. It is vitally important that we await clarity from SQA as to how estimated grades will be processed in these unprecedented circumstances and how the certification of qualifications will be managed. In the meantime, pupils can still engage with, and seek support from, staff via online learning.
The situation is continually evolving, often at considerable pace, and we have every sympathy with the volume and gravity of information that pupils, parents and carers are expected to process at present. Please remember that we are here to guide and reassure pupils, parents and carers in any way we can.
We will provide further clarification as and when we receive it from the SQA.
