At the end of our first ever YPI final the grant of £3000 was donated to Hopscotch. Rachel Cowan, Kate Main, Mhairi Ross and Sinead Timoney were our Youth and Philanthropy Initiative winners. The judges commented on their detailed presentation and their involvement in getting to know the charity.
YPI is supported by the Wood Foundation and S3 pupils have the opportunity to work together to research a charity of their choice. They gave presentations to their class who then chose a winning group to go through to the final. At Beeslack we were able to give all of our finalists donations from our non-uniform day money. Cheques for £50 were given to the Penicuik First Responders, CCLASP, Action for Sick Children Scotland, the Sick Kids Friends Foundation and Hopscotch (which was represented by two groups). We were delighted to welcome representatives from the charities to receive their donations. Mr Andrew Don, one of our judges for the evening, complimented the young people on their presentation skills and knowledge of their charities.
The evening extravaganza was ably hosted by Alex, Katie and Hollie who were the philanthropy competition winners from last session. It was well supported by staff and pupils and fuelled by a stunning bake sale as the Malawi Group were on hand to sell refreshments to raise money for their upcoming trip. While the judges deliberated we were entertained by the Jazz band; we were treated to a performance from more of our talented pupils who performed a short but varied programme of popular items. Overall the evening was a fabulous demonstration of the commitment, skills and enthusiasm of our young people.
