Music at Beeslack is delivered by a team of eleven music teachers - three full time classroom staff and eight visiting instructors. Central to our work is an ethos of all-round musical education. It is fundamental that youngsters are given the opportunity to experience music beyond familiar, safe boundaries, and through our class, instrumental and co-curricular work pupils are exposed to a large variety of styles delivered through a range of activities. Pupils are encouraged to take responsibility, to be creative and, through self and peer assessment, to extend their critical skills.

Our co-curricular programme is wide-ranging and forms an integral part of the life of the department, faculty and school.  Ensembles, bands, groups and choirs offer all our youngsters – whether learning an instrument or not - the experience of group music making as well as giving the opportunity to take part in school concerts and out of school performances.

Ensembles offered at Beeslack include Orchestra, String Orchestra, Wind Band, Jazz Band, Percussion Group, Junior Choir, Chamber Choir, Junior and Senior Taiko, Guitar Ensemble, Ukulele Group and Samba Band. Youngsters are also encouraged to pursue their own interests and student-run ensembles such as Ukulele, Folk and Rock groups are an important feature of our provision, offering as they do additional opportunities for the development of leadership and well as musical skills.

Rehearsals take place throughout the year during lunchtimes and after school, usually beginning in September.  After Christmas focus changes towards preparations for our school show, performed in June.  There are usually additional opportunities to perform out of school over the course of a session, with past performances ranging from community concerts (the IKEA Winter Festival, Love Russia and Music for MUMs charity concerts, for example) to high-profile national events including appearances at the Royal Opening of the Scottish Parliament and the UK Taiko Festival.
